I think Aerosmith said it best –
“Every time I look in the mirror, all these lines in my face getting clearer”.
Aging is a scary beast and affects every single one of us! But fear not, there are a TON of steps you can take to secure your youth and beauty and make age guessers at the fair look foolish!
One truly incredible ingredient you absolutely have to have in any anti-aging cream or serum is retinol.
Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A, a super powerful ingredient that is recommended by nearly every dermatologist, TV beauty evangelist, you name it.
This is one power packed antioxidant you simply cannot afford to miss out on. Retinol helps skin create better, healthier cells and increases cell turnover – meaning your dark spots, wrinkles and blotchy skin will fade that much faster.
How to Pick a Retinol Cream
When using retinol, make sure to pay attention to the packaging your products are coming in. Ones that let in air are a big no-no, these will quickly cause the retinol to become ineffective.
You should also be on the lookout for the percentage of retinol in anti-aging products – generally higher is better.
But the percentage you need to get can change due to several factors, namely your skin type, skin concern and your tolerance for retinol.
You can do some research to figure out what retinol percentage would be ideal for your skin type and the particular concern you have, but for tolerance the only real way to judge that is by experimenting with different types and seeing how you respond.
Also, you need to be careful, just because the percentage is higher doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a more effective product.
Other factors come into play like the delivery system, the stability of the ingredients (such as containers that let in too much air) and even what other ingredients the retinol is paired with! Wow, it can really seem like a daunting task!
You may think adding another cream or serum to your routine is going to be tedious and not worth your while – well I’m here to tell you that it’s simply not true!
These serums are an amazing tool that will smooth out wrinkles and blotchy skin and make you look drastically younger! Plus they only take out about a minute of your day to apply – truly anything but tedious.
Retinol and Thinning Skin
While perusing the internet or magazines, you may have come across some myths that retinol can actually thin the skin, exacerbating the effect of sun damage and dryness.
This is simply not true!
There’s been a large volume of research that shows that retinol in fact does the exact opposite, in causes the skin to repair itself, increase collagen production, and actually thickens skin.
So, there are quite a few factors to look at when you are planning on buying a retinol product. If you are just looking to make your skin look younger and more bright, I would recommend something with a medium amount of retinol, such as 0.1%.
This is enough to give you big-time results, but there will be less of the redness and irritation that is associated with the stronger strengths.
I’m currently testing retinol products on my self as well as gathering input from many of my colleagues and friends, in both life and the internet so I will be bringing some recommendations on the perfect retinol cream to you soon!
